I come from East Devon and would suggest a couple of places for you to visit. Firstly, suggest you take a trip
(on a summer's day) on the Tiverton Canal. It is a wonderful trip on a horse-drawn barge. Very slow and you can
watch dragonflies and other insects. It is one of the nicest things I've ever done.
Also go to Topsham (now considered part of Exeter). It's where I was born and has remained unspoilt over the
centuries. It has a fascinating seafaring history. Go down to the river and also go to the churchyard behind
St. Margarets Church where there is a spectacular view across the River Exe to the Exeter Canal. You can even
take a ferry over there for about 60p and walk for miles along the canal bank. At the other end of the town are
Dutch houses and if you walk around Goat Walk you will come to a nature reserve where the birdwatching is
fabulous. There is also the Bridge Inn - a centuries old pub which has remained almost the same since it was built
and the only pub the Queen has ever been to.
If you are feeling energetic, drive to Exmouth, park your car, take a train to Topsham which goes all along
the river, walk around Topsham (about 2 hours), then a ferry across the river to the canal bank. Then walk along
the canal bank to the Turf Hotel for a drink/meal. Then walk to Starcross where (summer only I think) you can get a
ferry across the Exe estuary to Exmouth and back to your car. This would take you all day and you need good
weather as you don't want to be stuck on the canal bank in the rain. The Exeter canal, up to now, is completely
unspoilt.
