|Walking in Dedham Vale|
There are numerous public footpaths in the area connecting Dedham, East Bergholt and Flatford. If you are visiting the area by train via Manningtree Station then see the Manningtree Walk.
Walking from Dedham
You can walk to either East Bergholt or Flatford or both starting from either near the road bridge over the River Stour in Mill Lane or from the path that starts on the bend where High Street changes to Brook Street. The distance to either Flatford or East Bergholt is about 2 miles.
Walking from East Bergholt
Walk down Flatford Lane opposite the church, turn right into Fenbridge Lane then on the path across to Dedham or continue down Flatford Lane to Flatford. Distance to Dedham is about 2 miles and to Flatford about 1 mile
Walking from Flatford
To East Bergholt: from Flatford Bridge walk straight past Bridge Cottage and up the lane ahead of you (don't turn right at the cottage) to a T-junction where you should turn left going past an obvious car park entrance on your left. Follow the lane to East Bergholt Church a distance of about 1 mile.
To Dedham: from Flatford Bridge cross over the river and follow the obvious path diagonally right to Dedham across the water meadows. A distance of about 2 miles.
There is a map is available from the Buffet at Manningtree Station, some places in Dedham, the Tourist Information Centre at Flatford or direct from the publishers. This map covers the Constable Country area between Manningtree, Flatford, East Bergholt and Dedham. It shows the public footpaths, places of interest and the places from where John Constable painted his pictures. I highly recommend this map especially at the price of £1.00 (in 2003).
