The St. John Maddermarket Alley. As with St. Gregory's Church on the previous page the church was built across an existing path so a tunnel was provided through the base of the church tower in order to maintain access.

Tombland Alley which runs from Tombland, just outside the cathedral's Erpingham Gate, under Augustine Steward's house to Princes Street. 'Tomb' in this context has no connection with a grave; it's an old Saxon term for an open place or market.
