We decided, on two occasions, that as the bus stop was only a few yards from the hotel we would try a combined walk/bus trip.
We first walked into Porlock Village along the footpath which starts about a half mile from the hotel going towards Porlock. This path is mostly wooded and passes around the hamlet of West Porlock on its South West side and emerges on the outskirts of Porlock. When we returned we caught a bus at the stop by the church (there is a timetable at this stop) and, after a short ride, were soon back at Porlock Weir.
On the second occasion we took the bus into Porlock Village and walked back to Porlock Weir. We started on the path that leads off the road that goes up past the church, Parson's Street, eventually crossing the A39 road above the notorious Porlock Hill. The path eventually joins New Road, the toll road , although pedestrians don't pay. We made our way through wooded country back to the hotel.
Both were very pleasant walks and there were lots of Bluebells at that time of year (May). You will really need a good map such as the Ordnance Survey map of Exmoor which is scaled at 2.5 inches to the mile.
