Watchbell Street is so called because a lookout was posted here to watch for enemy invaders from the sea and a bell was rung if anything suspicious was spotted. You can see from the view at the end that it is quite high here and a good place for a lookout.

The house facing the camera at the end of the street is Lamb House, an 18th century mansion, which became the home of author Henry James until 1916. Later it became the home of author E. F. Benson who was also Mayor three times in the 1930s.

The house is now owned by the National Trust and is open to the public.
