Carreg Cennan Castle (3), Carmarthenshire

The downward passage, Carreg Cennen Castle, Carmarthenshire
Carreg Cennen Castle.

In the south-eastern corner of the Inner Ward there is a small doorway with some steps leading downwards. Following these steps will lead you to this point which, as you can see, continues downward.

This passage is on the south side, the side that faces out over the 300 foot precipice, which is why you get such a good view across the valley.

The natural cave, Carreg Cennen Castle, Carmarthenshire
Carreg Cennen Castle.

This series of steps and passageways eventually leads to this - a natural cave within the limestone on which the castle is built and which has been incorporated into the castle structure.

Exploring this cave is interesting but great care is required! Watching how you place your feet on the trickier sections of floor means that you could easily bang your head on the low roof so you need to watch both!

The cave passage on a bend, Carreg Cennen Castle, Carmarthenshire
Carreg Cennen Castle.

Part of the cave passage on a bend. You can see what appears to be a channel cut by running water with the old floor surface on the right at a higher level.

This part of the passage floor, although rough, is level but it's not all this easy.

The uneven cave passage, Carreg Cennen Castle, Carmarthenshire
Carreg Cennen Castle.

There is no lighting down here so you MUST bring a good torch. Remember that this is not a man-made passage and so is very uneven both on the floor and the roof - mind your feet and your head.

In places the floor slopes a little steeply and can be smooth and slippery. You should wear some reasonably stout footwear with good gripping soles if you intend exploring this part as there is about 150 feet of it.
