The Manifold Valley, Staffordshire.
This handsome bridge over the River Manifold near Wetton Mill was built by the Duke of Devonshire in 1807 for packhorses carrying the copper from Ecton mine.
Just across the bridge is a small teashop run by the National Trust.

There were a number of locations in the Manifold Valley where we saw these pretty Water Aven (Geum rivale) flowers in May.

Thor's Cave is a spectacular sight from the floor of the Manifold valley. There is a path up to the cave but we didn't try it.
Excavations have shown that the cave was occupied as long ago as 10,000 years and this occupation probably continued until Roman or Saxon times, making it one of the oldest sites of human activity in the Peak. Stone tools and the remains of a range now extinct animals were found within the cave.

There was an area around this small feeder stream in the Manifold Valley which, as you can see, was covered in Ramsons (Allium ersinum) otherwise known as Wild Garlic.
