The painting 'The Ascension' was commissioned by Edward Alston, the Manninngtree brewer, in 1822 for the church of St. Michael and all Angels in Manningtree where it hung behind the Alter until the church was demolished in the 1660s. It then went to All Saints church Feering, Essex, and subsequently to Dedham.
