In Epping Forest most of the trees were pollarded by villagers from Loughton & Buckhurst Hill. They had Lopping rights. When they gave up these rights they were awarded money with which the Lopping hall in Loughton was built. Google Lopping Hall
I was born in Buckhurst Hill and Epping Forest was our playground. In those days parents were not at all concerned about letting young children play in the woods. In fact my junior school used the woods as a playground - we weren't supposed to go very far into the woods and the 'legal limit' was demarcated by a ditch. However some of us would try to see how far we could go into the woods and get back by the time the bell sounded.
