Are you sure about the year of the storm? Marcus Crouch in his guide "Essex", p. 142 claims that "the original tall spire fell during the great gale of 1658".

Not really. In spite of any rumours that you may hear I wasn't there at the time. :-))

I have seen a number of different dates mentioned including notes which indicated that the spire still existed in the middle 1700s so I have now made it more general.
