Comment about Stamford, Lincolnshire
The frame over the road is known as the Gallows Sign. It is said that highwaymen were hung from it to deter others. This road was once the main coach route between London and York.

Not just a frame... more a gibbet where n'er do wells were hanged and their remains put on public display to act as a warning to others.
It's one of the very rare things that Stamford is famous for - I don't recall seeing another elsewhere in the UK (unless anyone else knows different?).

Ooops, should have commented to 'anonymous 19 December 2009' that pictures are hung but people are hanged.
