Ancient Buildings, Dedham, Essex, England

The Old Grammar School.
This Georgian building, now a private house, was where John Constable went to school. He would have walked here each day from East Bergholt where he lived.

An example of a rare occurence these days - a medieval outside staircase in the yard behind the Sun Inn.

Southfields, situated south of the church, was built between the late 15th century and the early 16th century and may have originally been a public building as there were no divisions on the first floor.
It has now been converted to private dwellings.

The Southfields building has a courtyard plan with an open area in the centre as can be seen here looking through the front entrance gateway. There is another wing out of the picture on the right and the gateway goes through the front part of the building.
The upper storeys were originally, apparently, reached by external staircases such as that seen on the Sun Inn above.
