Winchester Cathedral (4), Winchester, Hampshire

×
Winchester Cathedral, Winchester.
The Great West Window was built in the 14th century and originally the stained glass depicted prophets and saints.
It was destroyed, together with all the other windows, on the orders of Oliver Cromwell during the civil war in 1642. However all the glass was collected in sacks and stored. When the monarchy was restored in 1660 the present window was reconstructed from all the collected14th century glass but, as much had been lost, no particular pattern could be formed.

Winchester Cathedral, Winchester.
This view from between the Quire and the altar, along the Nave, shows the scale of the great west window although, because of the brightness, the colours are not discernable.
Notice that the window fills the width of the Nave.
