Not quite all of the buildings in Pembridge are black and white and these two make a nice change. The nearest one shows brick infill and the furthest has rendered panels but featuring a pinkish wash.

The Duppa Almshouses are charitable housing at the top of Bridge Street. Originally this was six two storey dwellings, although now converted to four houses. There is a sign on the front which gives a date of 1661 but dendrochronology dating suggests that there was an earlier building here prior to the founding of the Almshouses.
The tree-ring date gives a range of 1486 to 1502, which suggests that these almshouses were actually making use of earlier buildings. This could explain the irregularity in the layout of this building.

Notice how much thicker the wooden beams are in the house on the extreme right compared with those in the houses on the left. That would have made it significantly more expensive to build. A bit of wealth flaunting perhaps?
