The Alhambra Court Hotel, York, Yorkshire Location map

We stayed at the Alhambra Court Hotel for the duration of our visit to York in September 2010. I made our booking by telephone on a Saturday and we arrived just about lunch time the next day and settled into our room.

Photograph of the Alhambra Court Hotel, York, Yorkshire, England   The bedroom was a reasonable size, a little larger than I might have expected, but wasn't very well lit as it faced onto the end wall of the next property which tended to block the light from the sky. The windows in our room are probably the two you can see in the upper storey on the left-hand side of the building in the photograph.

The bathroom was well lit with natural light from the window which actually made the bedroom a bit brighter when the bathroom door was open. We weren't too bothered about the lighting in the room as we didn't plan to spend very much time in it. The bathroom was well appointed and of a good size, both the bathroom and bedroom were well decorated and clean and there was a reasonable amount of storage space in the bedroom in the form of a largish wardrobe and a dressing table with a number of draws.

Some of the reasons we chose the Alhambra Court Hotel was because we wanted on-site free parking, easy walking distance to the city centre and it happened to have some vacancies at rather short notice. It turned out to be a good choice for a number of other reasons.

There were two sitting rooms on the ground floor, both very nicely appointed and one of which gave access, via some steps, to the small garden at the rear. If you look at the location map you may notice a railway line just behind the hotel but, don't worry, it's a little used branch line and it caused us no problems at all. The hotel is in a narrow, quiet cul-de-sac so road traffic noise was virtually non-existant.

The food at breakfast was good although the toast looked as though it had been waved at the toaster instead of being put in it but otherwise we had no complaints at all. The food at dinner was very good although the menu doesn't change. There were 9 main course choices, two of which were fish, and one was Mushroom Risotto (the only vegetarian option). I don't know if they would be prepared to provide more vegetarian options if notified in advance - you'd have to ask. The dinner 'process' was a little different from most other hotels in that it was necessary to book a table and to choose what we wanted from the menu earlier in the day. We didn't have any problems with this and it is actually a good idea because as the chef knows in advance what meals to prepare there is very little waste and the meal starts promptly as soon as you sit down. This keeps the cost down and we paid £94.00 per night for bed, breakfast and a three course evening meal which we thought was excellent value.

The hotel does have free wireless internet access but doesn't seem to advertise the fact.

We do recommend the Alhambra Court Hotel.
