Photograph of the Georgian House Hotel, Norwich, Norfolk, England   I first emailed this hotel with an enquiry at 12:37 PM and I received a reply by 12:57 PM - just 20 minutes later. Now that's what I call service!

We stayed at this hotel in June 2006 for the duration of our 7 day visit to Norwich. This is not a particularly large hotel with about 28 rooms and its own parking area in front of the hotel. The hotel is situated in Unthank Road on the outskirts of the old city, the area now contained by the inner ring road, which puts it at about a mile from the castle and about one and a half miles from the Cathedral. We walked into the city from the hotel a number of times and didn't find it onerous as there are some things to see on the way.

We stayed in the only suite for the first four nights and then had to move to another room because the suite was already booked for the weekend but we knew that before we went.

The main stairs in the entrance hall, which one has to use to access the suite and some other rooms, were surprisingly narrow and steep. The bedroom in the suite was of a reasonable size with plenty of storage but this was where some penny-pinching was first evident. There was a lot of hanging space in both wardrobes but only 4 coat-hangers in each. What do coat-hangers cost for goodness sake? The en-suite bathroom, accessed from the bedroom, did have a window, which is always a good thing, but with only a shower and not a bath simply because there wasn't room for one. Here we also noticed that the toilet paper was the lowest quality we had seen in what should be a good hotel. There was also only one small bottle of shampoo which I doubt would have served two people if we had both wanted to shampoo our hair on the same day. I have no doubt that we could have asked for some more but it does seem to be penny-pinching again. There was a digital television mounted on a wall bracket at the foot of the bed.

The sitting room was relatively small with room for one sofa, a large coffee table, a small table with one chair and some other small pieces of furniture including another television. Overall, though, the suite provided more space than a large average hotel room and could be considered the equivalent of one that is often described as a 'superior room'.

The dining room, or restaurant, was of a good size which looked out onto the hotel garden. Only the tables which were going to be used were laid and there were not many of those and this gave the room a rather bare look. It would have looked much better if all the tables had been set or at least provided with some sort of decoration but I suspect that there are not enough staff to maintain that. The food was of a very high standard but our biggest disappointment was the menu. There were starters and desserts and four main courses plus one vegatarian dish and the main courses didn't change the whole time we were there which does not give a lot of choice. There were only very minor changes to the starters and desserts. I don't find that at all satisfactory in a three star hotel.

There is a very small bar which also provides bar meals but the bar would have been totally inadequate for eating them although they can also be eaten in bedrooms or the resturant. There is also a small hotel lounge but again rather unsuitable for the number of rooms.

The staff were all cheerful and helpful at all times and we have no complaints at all about the housekeeping. The hotel is easy to get to by car without having to battle with the streets and traffic of the inner part of the city.

The hotel also purports to provide free wireless broadband Internet access to customers but when I tried to connect on our first day, Monday, I couldn't. The receptionist didn't know what to do and we had to wait for the manager the next day who re-booted the server and I was then able to connect. I was able to connect for the next three days until Friday when, once again, there was no connection. It was still unavailable on the Monday that we left.

Overall a bit disappointing.

NOTE: There are a number of alterations and extensions in progress which means that the bar, lounge and restaurant may change significantly both in size and location in the not too distant future. I would like to see the menu included in those alterations.
