| The Wrea Head Hotel | Location map | Aerial view |
We stayed at this hotel for most of our visit to this area in July 1999 although we did not start here.
The Story.
We originally booked at the Hackness Grange Hotel at Hackness where we had asked for a superior room which, from our experience of hotels, generally meant a large room rather than the standard sized hotel room. When we arrived we discovered that their idea of a superior room was one in the main building rather than the annexe. We felt that that was misleading.
We also found that the hair drier provided ( a fixture in the bathroom) had a large hole in the air tube which made it useless, the bathroom door would not shut properly, the picture on the television was so bad as to be un-watchable and there was no remote control. The explanation for the bad television picture was that the aerial had been moved by strong winds during a storm about 2 or 3 days previously. It had, however, still had not been corrected. We asked for, and were promised, a remote control for the television. It was never provided.
When we went for dinner that evening we found the dining room to be rather cramped with little space between the tables and the service was slow. We heard other diners complaining about the slow service.
I complained to the manager who, because they had no other available rooms, offered us a room in another of the group's hotels about 3 miles away in Scalby on the outskirts of Scarborough. Although the manager was pleasant enough we were offered no apology. I would not go there again.
Our stay at the Wrea Head Hotel
So it was that we found ourselves, on the second day of our trip, in the Wrea Head Hotel and very nice it was too. Situated in about 14 acres of grounds it was a rather attractive old stone building.
The lounge was large and light with plenty of comfortable seating and an exceptionally pleasant atmosphere. Our bedroom, with views over the grounds and surrounding countryside, was what we would expect of a superior room; large and very comfortable.
The staff could not have been more helpful and remained steadfastly cheerful throughout. The food was excellent as one would expect of a hotel of this standard. Ultimately we were glad that we had moved as the Wrea Head was more than just an acceptable substitute and turned a poor start into an enjoyable trip.
