Venta Silurum, Caerwent, Caldicot, Monmouthshire

We hadn't heard of Caerwent, let alone Venta Silurum, until recently, so as that and Caldicot are within a few miles of each other and we wanted to see Caldicot Castle we thought we would also visit Caerwent. We were astounded at what we found!
These foundations are those of a 4th Century Romano British Temple but there is no evidence to say what diety was worshipped here. There is an Apse visible on the right and the Temple would have been entered at the far end.

All the Roman sites in Caerwent are within walking distance of each other and there is a free Car Park nearby run by CADW who maintain these sites.
This a a group of Shops and Houses.

This is the remains of the foundations of a Roman Villa. That small group of vertical stones in the corner of a room are the remains of a Hypocaust; a Roman under-floor heating system.

The foundations of the Basilica; the equivalent of our modern-day Town Hall.
