Ancient Buildings, Laycock, Wiltshire

The George Inn in West Street dating back to 1361 is one of the oldest inns in the country and is the oldest in Lacock.
We had coffee here mid-morning and found it to be a cosy little place.

An interesting group of houses with some being all stone built but the one in the centre having a timber frame with brick infill. Seems unusual in an area that has, apparently, easy access to stone.

The Tithe Barn in East Street dates from the 14th century and is a very impressive building. It was used for a village dance during the filming of the television series 'Cranford' and has been used in the past as a market hall.

These houses are in High Street and show that combination of stone in the very lowest part with a timber frame sitting on top and using brick infill. Note the jettied construction of the house on the left which appears to have more conventional lime-washed infill.
