Photo looking down into the Great Hall, Conwy Castle, Conwy, Snowdonia, Caernarvonshire (Gwynedd), North Wales   Conwy Castle.

The Great Hall, 125 by 38 feet, with the cellars below. The roof of the great hall originally had 9 bays with large stone arches for support of which only the one in the picture survives. There were also 3 fireplaces to warm the room.

The rather odd bowed shape of the Great Hall was dictated by the bedrock foundations.

Picture of the Inner Ward and battlements walkway, Conwy Castle, Conwy, Caernarvonshire (Gwynedd), Snowdonia, North Wales   Conwy Castle.

This shows part of the walkway around the castle battlements with the Inner Ward to the right of the walkway. The Inner Ward was where the King's private apartments were situated. Further back where grass is showing is the Outer Ward.

Beyond the Outer Ward a small section of the town can be seen including part of the town wall ( better seen in the larger view).

Photo of a medieval spiral stairway, Conway, Snowdonia, Caernarvonshire (Gwynedd), North Wales   Conwy Castle.

This shows part of the medieval spiral stairway which gives access to the higher levels. The widest, outer end, of the steps is really just deep enough for comfort. These stairways are not very well lit with the occasional small window in the wall.

You will notice, on the right of the stairs a rope handrail has been provided for the modern-day visitor. There really isn't room for anything more substantial.

In some parts of the castle there seems to be a maze of small passages and steps built into the walls as shown here. They are not very complex, however, so you are not likely to get lost but they are rather interesting nonetheless.
