The Nave Ceiling, Peterborough Cathedral, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, England, Great Britain
Peterborough Cathedral Interior.

This page will be a pain in the neck. It is all ceilings so you will be walking around with your head thrown back all the time. But it is worth it.

The hand-painted wooden ceiling of the nave, completed between 1230 and 1250, still survives. It is unique in Britain and one of only four such ceilings in the whole of Europe.

Remember that this ceiling is about 200 feet long and I have heard that the painting took seven years to complete.

The Retro-Quire Ceiling, Peterborough Cathedral, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, England, Great Britain
Peterborough Cathedral Interior.

The Retro-Quire ceiling is in the newest part of the cathedral, built in the 16th century, and features this amazing fan vaulting. Although there is no hard evidence to support the theory it is believed to be the work of John Wastell who is responsible for similar fan vaulting in Kings College Chapel in Cambridge which is only 35 miles away.
