High Street, Lincoln, Lincolnshire.

After squeezing through The Strait you will pop out here, the northern end of High Street which is now a pedestrian only street.

Even though we are now getting into the modern part of the city we certainly haven't yet left hisory behind as evidenced by those timber-framed buildings on the left.

Two Timber-Framed Buildings, High Street, Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England, Great Britain
High Street, Lincoln, Lincolnshire.

These two timber-framed buildings are at the junction of The Strait and High Street. The less imposing building on the left, Dernstall House, has parts which are 12th century and so is older than the more imposing building on the right, the 15th century Cardinal's Hat.

Both buildings you may notice are jettied.

The Stonebow and Guildhall, High Street, Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England, Great Britain
High Street, Lincoln, Lincolnshire.

Further south along High Street and we reach the Stonebow. This late 15th century archway was the south gate of the city and surrounding it is the Guildhall; both seen from the north.

High Bridge, High Street, Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England, Great Britain
High Street, Lincoln, Lincolnshire.

Finally we arrive at the bottom of the hill and High Bridge. These timber-framed buildings date from about 1550 although the bridge itself dates back to about 1160.

There was a chapel on it, built in 1235, but it was removed in 1762. Bridges like this were common in the Middle Ages, the best known being London Bridge, but most have long since been demolished.
