The High Street, Wells, Somerset, England, Great Britain
Wells, Somerset.

High Street looking towards the Market Square with the cathedral in the background. Most of the roads in the city centre are one way and form a roughly circular system.

The main centre of Wells is really very small and can be covered fairly quickly even when walking.

St. Cuthbert's Church, Wells, Somerset, England, Great Britain
Wells, Somerset.

For a local parish church St. Cuthbert's Church is very impressive. Built in the 13th century it is the largest parish church in Somerset and its tower is among the best in Somerset.

It was considerably restored in the 15th century and at one time had a central tower which was removed in the mid 16th century.

Penniless Porch, Wells, Somerset, England, Great Britain
Wells, Somerset.

In a corner of the market Square is Penniless Porch which was created by Bishop Bekynton as an act of mercy to give shelter to the beggars who clustered at the cathedral gate. There is a stone seat inside where they could plead for alms from those on their way to and from church.

It leads through to the Cathedral Green very near the West Front.
