Norwich – Wednesday

Norwich – Wednesday

The cloudy weather is still with us although the weather forecast says that it will stay dry.

We decide to head north on the train as Norwich and Norfolk does have some useful public transport links. There is a line from Norwich which runs south-east through the Norfolk Broads to Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft called ‘The Wherries Line’ and another line which runs north to Cromer and Sheringham called ‘The Bittern Line’. We chose the Bittern Line because at Sheringham it connects with the North Norfolk Railway which is a heritage line running steam trains. There are also two bus services which supplement these rail lines. There is ‘The Broads Hopper’, which runs through the Broads and connects the Wherries Line with the Bittern Line and there is also ‘The Coast Hopper’ which extends the Bittern Line by travelling west from Cromer or Sheringham through various of the coastal villages to Hunstanton and Kings Lynn.

Our train was late getting in to Norwich Station and so was 7 minutes late in leaving but that was not a problem and the journey to Sheringham was about an hour. The train managed to make up a bit of time on the way so we were only about 2 minutes late arriving. There was also a change in the weather which gave us some patches of blue sky and a watery sun.

The first thing we saw when walking out of the station was a plume of smoke in the distance and this was the cause.

North Norfolk Railway

We bought tickets to the next station, Weybourne, which was a journey of only 7 minutes where we alighted. This station is over a half-mile from the village which is where we were headed. It was a very pleasant walk along a typically quiet Norfolk lane.

Arriving in the village we headed for the church which is unusual in that it has the remains of an ancient priory attached to it.

Just along the road is Weybourne Mill which is no longer a working mill and has been converted to a house which now offers Bed and Breakfast. We intended to catch the Coast Hopper bus back to Sheringham so we went back to the bus stop near the church and after a short wait caught the bus and were soon back in Sheringham.

The train took us back to Norwich which, incidentally, has a rather imposing station.

Norwich – Tuesday

Norwich – Tuesday

Today dawned cloudy with a forecast of possible showers so 'inside' looks good. We made our way over to the cathedral to look round the inside as we saw only the outside yesterday.

The Nave is the second longest, after Winchester, in England. Whilst we were in there we saw a young blackbird perched on a ledge in one of the aisles alongside the nave giving a plaintive cheep ocassionally. A little later on all the lights went out and it turned out that they were trying to encourage the bird towards a bright door opening that went straight to the outside. They apparently succeeded and shortly after the lights came on again.

In the North Aisle there is a small exhibition of Church Plate in a loft near the Jesus Chapel and within that loft there were some medieval paintings on the roof and part of the walls.

A little later we noticed a strange rushing noise had started and suddenly realised that it was heavy rain – an excellent time to be inside. We decided to have a break and retired to the Cathedral Refectory – very bright, very modern and built alongside one wall of The Cloisters. You can see part of the Refectory on the left and the Cloisters wall on the right.

Afterwards we looked round The Cloisters and the maze within it then decided it was time to move on – Dragon Hall called!

We had a street plan with us and, believe me, you would never find your way around the maze of city streets without one. We managed to find King Street and there was Dragon Hall!

Dragon Hall

An extremely interesting medieval merchants house and trading hall. They even had some medieval clothes for visitors to try on so Amanda took the plunge.

We went back to the hotel to un-emcumber ourselves, well me really, of the rather heavy tripod used to support the camera inside the two buildings. After some refreshments and a short rest I decided to walk along to Carrow Hill to look at part of the old city wall whilst Amanda decided to stay in the hotel.

I returned to the hotel and that is where we stayed until the next day.

We got there in the end!

We got there in the end!

I'm not talking about Norwich when I say 'We got there in the end' I'm talking about connecting to the Internet from the hotel. I had a lot of trouble yesterday, after we arrived in Norwich, trying to connect via the hotel's wireless broadband and the receptionist could not give me any advice on what might be wrong. The manager wasn't in yesterday but she was in today and after hearing of my problems suggested that she reboot their computer – and here I am connected.

I am now a bit later than I intended in updating the Blog. We arrived in Norwich yesterday, Monday, about mid-day after an uneventful journey and found the hotel quite easily. It is situated near the inner ring road which encircles the city centre and we are probably within walking distance for most things.

We transferred our luggage to our room and went straight out into the sunshine. Making our way towards the cathedral we went via Elm Hill.

Elm Hill

Elm hill is a perfectly preserved medieval cobbled street. The white building on the bend is The Britons Arms, a coffee house and restaurant, where we had lunch. We both had Home Made Pork Pie with salad and it was the best pork pie we had ever had. If you have had a pork pie from your local shop then forget it – this was absolutely streets and streets ahead of that. On that meal alone we would strongly recommend this restaurant.

Then we walked onward and into the Cathedral Close. This cathedral has the second highest spire, after Salisbury, in the country.

After leaving the cathedral we walked along the Riverside Walk by the River Wensum.

Turning back through the city centre we went past the castle.

Norwich Castle

I have to say that Norwich seems to be very good shopping centre where one could so easily be encouraged to spend lots of money.

Monday was very warm and much too humid for our liking but there was plenty of sun and blue skies.
