So, was it muddy?
What do you think? And that was just 5 minutes into the walk.
Just been on a 4.3 mile walk taking 1 hour 22 minutes according to the GPS in my phone. Some of it across fields, hence the above picture, some through woods, some along country lanes and one part along the top of an ancient prehistoric monument – The Rampart.
The picture was also taken using my phone. Devilishly versatile these phones.

I certainly hope you took your shoes off before you went in the house
Now your shoes are interesting, but……. Where are the pictures of the prehistoric monument (and I don’t mean you ) ?

Do I look silly? DON’T ANSWER THAT.
Somebody’s asking for trouble.
It isn’t going to be easy to take a photograph because it is just a bank and ditch, although quite a wide deep ditch, and there are trees growing in the sides of the ditch. However when I next go on that walk I’ll try and take a picture.
This section of map shows the Rampart together with the general area:

Interesting map. I zoomed out and it says Roman Road along the A12. Which road was this?
Next question; what did this area look like 1500-2000 years ago? Where was the shore line, estuary etc? Do you have a link handy for maps like that? If not, don’t spend time searching, I can do that instead.

I don’t think anyone knows its name but it ran from London (Londinium) through Colchester (Camulodenum) to ‘somewhere’.
Well in spite of the rumours I didn’t live here then.
As to the rest of your question I don’t know where the shoreline was and I don’t know of any maps to show that. If you do find any I’d be interested to know.

Everything I found on Roman Roads identifies the road (along the A12) in some detail, but doesn’t give it a name
Coastlines. Here is a link that shows “potential” ancient shorelines (0-20 meters above current ocean level). On page 21 of this report is a map. http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/publications/nmp-essex-management-report/ Most of rest of report is far to technical to bother with
Barry’s home is in this area

That’s right. I believe the records for that road are VERY sparse and all that’s really known is that it’s a Roman route.
I’ll have a look at the link you gave about the shoreline.
