Was it or wasn’t it?

Well it was! We have just seen a butterfly go past the window in December! We didn’t get a good look but it was large and dark which means it was probably a Peacock or Red Admiral. It is very mild today but we still would not have expected butterflies to be flying around.

What next I wonder?

  1. December 8th/9th in Central Wisconsin. Our first measurable snowfall!! We’re about 45 days behind in first measurable snowfall. Although the first usually occurs in late October, it melts rather quickly.

Snowfall last night/today — a blizzard canceling schools etc. Projected accumulation — 10-14 inches with a lot of drifting. I don’t remember this combination of events happening in my 62 years.

Temperature wise, its been fairly mild. By end of week — don’t ask. Winter has arrived and odds are great we’ll have a white Christmas!

  3. Did see a moth about a month ago. Can’t tell you when last butterfly came through.

If all goes well in March, I may be able to pack some snow for you? Assuming we have some?

I’ll be uploading some Christmas photos to my site this weekend. Guess I better include snow photos?

  4. From what I can see, Old Guy is getting hammered again today. That same storm visited my area yesterday. I lucked out – 1/2 snow then lots of rain.

I will take the butterfly any day.

The interesting thing about butterflies and moths is that whilst they are the same animal really it is very unusual to see a butterfly flying in the winter but seeing a moth under the same conditions is not unusual. Some of the moths are apparently adapted to flying during the winter although not in temperatures below freezing.

I’ll look out for your snow pics Old Guy.

Do you want it gift wrapped?
